Story Submitted by: Joe, Head Start staff
I am a Navy veteran, and I learned how to maintain and repair weapons systems. When I entered the workforce after the military, I stayed in the industrial field, where I eventually ended up working on gold dredges in Northern California.
Unfortunately, I injured my back and went on disability. During my rehab, I began volunteering at my son’s preschool. This was a turning point in my life and career. The Lead Teacher mentored me as I began taking classes in early childhood education and started my new career path.
I have been working with Head Start families and children for over 30 years now. I have transported children, been a Lead Teacher, Center Director, Education Supervisor, and I am currently a Family Services Division Manager. In my youth, while I was in the Navy, I would have scoffed at the thought of being a preschool teacher—now I consider it one of my proudest accomplishments.
I have had the opportunity to positively impact hundreds of children and families, and I feel that is a tremendous achievement. As a side note, my son is thriving, married, and owns his own home—thank you, Head Start!
I believe in children, and I believe in the strength of positive relationships. Head Start is all about uplifting families, strengthening communities, and building a brighter future. That’s important.
