Story submitted by: Olga, Head Start parent and staff
As I began my education career at Woodland Community College, one of my electives was Early Childhood Development, and one of the requirements was to observe a childcare center. I went into a Head Start center and signed up to volunteer. I was very nervous, but the moment I saw the classroom, I had the best feeling. I knew I was in the right place and wanted to pursue this career.
Head Start has impacted my life, both as a parent and by having my daughter in the program. The program helped me become a leader, mentor, and gain the knowledge for the role I’ve held for the past 25 years. I started as an associate teacher and worked hard to become a Comprehensive Services Manager. I am very proud to say I have continued my career with Head Start.
I’m a Head Start Comprehensive Services Manager because I believe every child deserves early intervention through a learning environment and positive interactions. As Head Start staff, the program provided education, training, mentoring, and, most importantly, guidelines to continue my education.
The Head Start staff recognized my daughter’s need for speech services. The program provided guidelines and resources to begin the IEP process. As a single mother, I was terrified, but the support and understanding they gave me was amazing. I am so thankful for the services that helped my daughter, Onica, move forward.
